Designing the Event Experience

Designing the Event Experience

Building a visual identity and environmental system that helps a large-scale global event look cohesive and keeps people moving in the right direction (literally).

My Role

Creative Direction · Event Branding · Environmental Design · Wayfinding · Production Direction · Vendor Management · On-Site Execution

I led and executed the event's visual identity including the logo, color palette, typography, and supporting brand assets and translated that identity into a system spanning environmental graphics and event signage.

I also led signage production and implementation, collaborating with printers, fabricators, installers, on-stage designer, the event manager, and security stakeholders from pre-production through on-site execution.

Challenge

This private, invitation-only event brings together leadership from around the world and emerging technologies across a large, multi-building property.

The scale of the event created two interconnected design challenges: establishing a distinctive visual experience and making a complex physical environment intuitive for attendees to navigate.

Large-format and custom-fabricated graphics required coordination across multiple specialized vendors, while the size and layout of the property meant every directional decision needed to consider the attendee journey, event logistics, and security requirements.

The Outcome

The result was a cohesive event environment that carried a distinct visual identity across a complex physical footprint while giving attendees clear, consistent cues for navigating the experience.

Over the duration of my role, I developed and led the event branding strategy as the event grew, helping support 55% attendance growth and 50% growth of the expo hall. As the event expanded, I evolved its branded footprint and creative ecosystem alongside it combining brand development, environmental design, wayfinding strategy, vendor coordination, and on-site execution into a scalable event experience.

Approach

Effective event signage had to do more than look cohesive. It needed to help attendees understand where they were, where they needed to go, and how to get there efficiently. I conducted multiple site visits to understand the property firsthand and developed a working footprint of the hotel and event spaces. This allowed me to map signage needs against the attendee journey and work through placement, navigation, event logistics, and security considerations with the event manager before production began. These site visits helped turn the signage plan from a collection of individual graphics into a coordinated environmental system.

Building the Visual System

I developed the event identity and established a visual language that could scale across applications from small informational signage to large-format environmental graphics. The visual approach for this event reflects a journey from the search for potential to the eventual reveal of the technology, capturing thr way we present these standout technologies to our partners. But using primary colors as our base, we solidify that when we master the basic, we can unlock the extraordinary. Besides the color palette representing the depth and discovery, I also included several hand drawn moments to highlight the humanity and core principle that ground our model — the people creating, manufacturing, testing, and utilizing the technology.

The system included:

  • Event logo and visual identity

  • Color and typography

  • Microsoft templates

  • Directional and wayfinding signage

  • Large-format environmental graphics

  • Human centered videography

Creating a flexible system allowed individual pieces to serve different functional needs while still feeling like part of one cohesive event experience. Some of the below images have been edited for proprietary information.

From Design to Production

The size and complexity of the event required a production strategy that could support both advance planning and real-time needs on site.

I developed relationships with three vendors specializing in advance signage production, on-site printing, and installation. I coordinated with these partners throughout pre-production and production to align on specifications, materials, fabrication, installation requirements, and event-day logistics. On site, I supported the installation of large-scale graphics and led the physical setup and placement of medium- and small-scale signage, ensuring the final environment aligned with both the creative vision and the logistical plan.

Designing Across Teams

The signage and product system sat at the intersection of design, event operations, attendee experience, and security. By working closely with the event manager, security stakeholders, vendors, contractors, printers, fabricators, and installers, I was able to maintain continuity between what was planned, what was produced, and what attendees ultimately experienced on site.
